Intervista a Santino Hassell

Buon pomeriggio a tutti,

Thank you very much Santino for your time, for having accepted to answer to our questions and for sharing your experiences with us. We feel very honored and lucky!

Can you tell us about the origins of the Five Boroughs series? Did you build any of the characters taking inspiration from some people that you know?

There are elements of people I know and even some things I’ve experienced, but there are no characters who are based entirely on real people. Originally, I just wanted to write a novel about NYC public school teachers trying to cope with the stress of the job and the city all while falling in love. As I thought about who Michael Rodriguez was, and what made him tick, the rest of the story and the cast came to life.

How did you come up with the title and how did you choose the setting for your Five Boroughs series?

Io vivo e respiro New York, quindi, mi è sembrato naturale ambientarvi la mia prima serie.

I live and breathe New York City, so it seemed natural to me to set my first series there. The city is so diverse and so intense that you can visit every borough and still discover a neighborhood with its own personality and story.

Why did you decide to tell the story from one single point of view in Sutphin Boulevard? Is it easier to write from both point of views or from one only?

I don’t think either are necessarily easy, but I try to approach it in terms of who has the most growing to do as a character. If both characters have a lot of development and growth to overcome the obstacles in the relationship, I do two. If it’s mostly one person with a lot of barriers, I focus on them.

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

Ho iniziato attivamente a voler migliorare la mia arte e a scrivere romanzi veri e propri accessibili a tutti i lettori.

I started actively wanting to improve my craft, and wanting to write really tight novels that are accessible to all readers.

Your work explores topics like racism, diversity, sexual orientation and gender identity. What is most important to you in terms of gender, stereotypes and identity in your work?

That all people are represented. You can’t write a series set in NYC and only write about white people, or only write about gay men, or only write about bisexual men. To do that, I would have been actively erasing a large percentage of the city, and that is disrespectful.

Michael and Nunzio have know each other for 20 years. Friendship is important in your books: is it still an important value for you in real life?

Recensione
It is! A long lasting, healthy friendship honestly matters more to me than romantic relationships. There are no strings or expectations other than “I’m here for you, and you’re here for me.” I often fall for friends, so it’s not surprising that friends-to-lovers stories tend to be in many of my books.

E come lettore quali preferisci maggiormente?
Do you like more writing “from enemies to lovers” or “from friends to lovers” stories? Which ones do you like to read most?

I love both, but enemies to lovers stories are SO intense. I love writing the build up of sexual tension amid hostility and getting those characters to break. I actually think I read friends to lovers more though.

For us, one of the most appealing quality of the Five Boroughs series is the development and the deep psychological analysis of the characters, both major and minor. How did you work on their evolution?

Tendo a sviluppare i personaggi procedendo a ritroso.

I tend to develop characters by working backward. For example, I knew Michael was a grumpy somewhat cynical teacher—what happened in his past to cause that? I don’t believe in “Grumpy” just being a sort of quirk. There’s a reason a character is negative or sarcastic all the time, because those tend to be defense mechanisms. You have to go back into their pasts and flesh out their history, and I try to do that for both main characters and side characters.

Raymond represents the millennial’s generation: how was like writing about such a young character? Do you find differences between his generation and our generations?

I think the major difference is that millennials expect a lot more from society and the government, whereas Gen X was kind of jaded. At least that was my experience. I was burnt out on politics, burnt out on war, I hated everyone, I honestly expected the worst, I thought only yuppies would make it due to connections and everyone else would fall to the side. But millennials are go getters. They’re ambitious and political, and they’re not going to sit back and take someone treating them bad. In Raymond’s case, he represents the other side of that. The person who never quite got jump started because his mother was trying to shield him from the world, so he had a late start but then totally blossomed.

Among the books you’ve read, what's the one you would have liked to write? And which is the character that resembles you the most?

I would have loved to write Willing Victim by Cara McKenna, except I don’t think I’d have done it justice. I don’t really know that any characters resemble me.

11-Come hai iniziato a scrivere? Come descriveresti il tuo lavoro?
How did you start writing? How would you describe your work?

I started writing when I was a kid. Usually it was emo short stories about me reimagining my life, or poems, then grungy angst songs. Eventually, I fell into yaoi and slash fanfiction. After I wrote the original slash series In the Company of Shadows with Ais, I realized I really loved it.

Which are your literary models? Which authors have influenced and inspired you?

Io sono stato influenzato da Neil Gaiman, Jordan Castillo Price, Amy Jo Cousins e Molly O'Keefe.

I’ve been influenced by Neil Gaiman, Jordan Castillo Price, Amy Jo Cousins, and Molly O’Keefe.

13-Che tipo di lettore sei? Segui i consigli dei tuo amici o vai d'istinto?
What kind of reader are you like? Do you usually follow friends’ advices or do you choose a book following your instinct?

I tend to follow recommendations when reading romance because there is such a vast amount of novels to choose from, then I stick with authors who I really love. When I’m in the mood for something new, I’ll ask for recs on Twitter or in my reader group.

Magari Netflix?
Is there one of your series that you would like to see on tv? Maybe on Netflix?

Io vorrei vedere I cinque distretti su Netflix!

Recensione
I would for Five Boroughs to be a Netflix show!

What was the book with positive feedback and reviews that you just didn’t expect?

Honestly, I didn’t expect FIRST AND FIRST to become one of the most popular books in the series! I was worried people would not relate to Caleb or like Oli, but it was the exact opposite. Several of my regular readers love Caleb.

16-Che rapporto hai coi tuoi lettori?
What relationship do you have with your readers?

I try to have a friendly rapport while keeping a healthy distance. My Facebook group Get Hasselled, and my Patreon, are the best places for me to interact with them.

Tell us three MM novels or series that are a must-read...

La serie Bend or Break di Amy Jo Cousins, la serie Middle of Somewhere di Roan Parrish e Wound Tight di Tessa Bailey.

Amy Jo Cousins’ Bend or Break series, Roan Parish’s Middle of Somewhere series, and Tessa Bailey’s Wound Tight.

Is there a character in your books that if she/he extisted in real world would end up to be your crush?

Raymond Rodriguez — sempre!

Raymond Rodriguez—always!

What’s next on your writing schedule? Can you give us any information about the upcoming books, or any other projects that you’re working on?

My next book to be released is ILLEGAL CONTACT, my first American football romance about a suspended tight end who is on house arrest and falls for his personal assistant. Writing-wise, I’m writing the 6th Five Boroughs book—CITYWIDE. It’s an anthology featuring novellas for the Queens Crew
